Utah Valley University, or UVU for short, is a publicly-funded university located in Orem, which is a city in Utah County, in the US state of Utah, with a population estimated at a number of more than 93 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the sixth-largest city in Utah. Orem is also one of the principal cities of the Provo-Orem, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area, which contains all of Utah and Juab counties. In 2010, Orem was named the 5th best place to raise a family, by Forbes magazine.
UVU was founded in 1941, first starting as the Central Utah Vocational School, its name being changed several times, over the years, since then, to reflect its changing role, the institution adopting its current name in July 2008, when it gained university status. Utah Valley University offers its students, today, 58 bachelor degrees, 66 associate degrees and 21 certificate/diploma programs, as well as 2 high-demand master degrees in education and nursing.
Athletics
The athletic teams from UVU are known as the Utah Valley Wolverines, who compete in NCAA Division I in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, track and field, cross country, baseball, wrestling and volleyball. Their mascot is the Wolverine and their distinctive colors are green and gold.
